The Band
By day, theologian Harvey Cox is one of Harvard's
most illustrious scholars and a nationally-known
author. A Professor at Harvard Divinity School, Cox's
most recent book is
When Jesus Came to Harvard: Making Moral Choices Today.
However, when Cox is
not in the classroom, he can often be found blowing
his own horn -- a tenor saxophone to be exact -- with
his jazz band, Harvey Cox & The Embraceables.
Joining Harvey on our stage this May were
Flautist/composer Linda Chase, who is on the faculty at Berklee
College of Music, and is interested in sacred music of various world
cultures and interdisciplinary arts;
Saxophonist Norm Faramelli, Lecturer in Social Ethics at Boston
University and Priest in Residence at St. Luke's and St. Margaret's
Episcopal Church in Allston;
Bass player Manuel Kauffman, who successfully escaped the
corporate world in Zurich, Switzerland, and has been immersing
himself in American and non-American music;
Drummer Rod Nordell, a Berklee trustee emeritus who started
playing the drums in the 4th grade when a snare drum was given to his
father by a movie theater pianist to pay off a small debt;
Guitarist Tom Pendergast, who has studied jazz composition and big
band arranging at Berklee and Flamenco guitar in Spain; and
Keyboardist Jim Wallace, a former Abt Associates executive.
Founded in 1973 to play at a New Year’s Eve party for a Cambridge housing coop,
The Embraceables asks at most a minimal charge for community or hospital events, or for nonprofits’ fundraisers, but does charge for private parties to help defray expenses.
While the group's mission is serious, its music is fun and vibrant. "We
play old jazz, new jazz, swing...it's upbeat, easy to dance to, and appeals
to a broad audience," said keyboard player Jim Wallace.
"Just because the organizations we play for are doing
serious work doesn't mean they don't enjoy stomping to a
great jazz beat."
